TaeguTec’s Small Line for Big Line Jobs

If good things come in small packages then TaeguTec’s new line of mini inserts comes at a time when the current economic downturn and improved casting and forging technologies demand a change from the conventional cutting tool.

Depths of cut in rough turning are in the range of 2 to 3 millimeters, thus rendering the 12 to 15 mm conventional ISO turning inserts’ cutting edge lengths redundant.

The idea behind the RhinoRush line is to introduce a series of mini tuning inserts that meet the manufacturing industry’s needs of reduced machining costs and competiveness while keeping an eye on the environment.

The 9 and 13 mm new line of inserts is just as strong as the 12, 15 and 16 mm inserts available but at a fraction of the cost and size.

Besides the new series’ small but durable size, TaeguTec’s RhinoRush has a unique two directional clamping force that outperforms the conventional ISO directional clamping force tools on the market.

Tests found that the new series improved productivity during high feed cutting with low cutting force in general applications.

Nicknamed “Size Technology,” RhinoRush’s added benefit is the exceptional performance in interrupted machining and weak machine set-ups.

The series includes holders with rigid clamping and three types of chip breaker inserts: FG, PC and MT.

The FG chip breaker should be used for finishing applications at a low cutting force on steel and stainless steel materials.

For semi-finish to medium applications in steel machining, the PC chip breaker’s positive geometry has excellent chip control and is the first choice for automotive component machining.

The third chip breaker, the MT, is ideal for medium to medium rough applications in steel machining and is suitable for continuous and interrupted cutting.

On a medium carbon steel workpiece with a cutting speed of 200m/min, the FG chip breaker performed exceptionally well even at a depth of cut of 2 mm with a feed rate of 0.35 while the MT chip breaker hit almost 5 mm depth of cut at 0.45 mm/rev. The PC chip breaker received a lot of praise because of its 4 mm depth of cut and 0.4 mm/rev feed rate.

Tool life test results at TaeguTec found that the number of passes during interrupted cutting conditions on medium carbon alloy steel work pieces (cutting condition of V=100m/min, f=0.6mm/rev, d=4mm, dry) were almost doubled compared to conventional ISO tools. Both the ISO standard and RhinoRush tools used the same chip breaker and coating grades.
TaeguTec explained that the new line will increase productivity and save on cost due to its efficient and improved design as well as the insert’s smaller but optimal size.
